Description:
Meet Penelope, sometime known to many friends as Penny! This tiny long-haired beauty found herself as a stray on the streets and was turned in to a shelter. ATDR jumped at the chance to spring her and place her in a warm, loving foster home where she’s safe and properly spoiled and cared for. We’ve discovered quickly that Penelope was obviously someone’s well-loved pet who got lost from home somehow, probably due to the fact that she appears to be blind. What a frightening thing to happen to a precious little one…thank goodness for the kindness of strangers.
Penelope responds well to voices, moving in that direction when called or talked to. She’s very smart and has already figured out how to move around her foster home with little confusion. She LOVES being snuggled and adores cuddling with her foster mom in the big chair and with foster siblings. She enjoys meal time, but doesn’t like dining alone, preferring the close company of her person while she eats. She sleeps well in a comfortable crate at night and is willing to go outside to pottie. She absolutely LOVES taking a bath, savoring the warm soapy water and gentle massaging hands. She’s soft as silk, stunningly beautiful and equally sweet and good natured. She’s very accustomed to being lovingly cared for…
Penelope has an appointment at Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic to see an ophthalmologist in the hope that something can be done to restore her sight, so she won’t be ready for adoption until we’ve completely explored all options available in the hope of helping her. Stay tuned for updates to her profile in this regard after her first appointment.
When Penelope is fully ready for adoption, she’s going to make someone a WONDERFUL loving addition to their home and family. She’s the ready-made perfect agreeable girl!
ATDR is seeking donations for the continued care of Penelope. If you can find it in your heart to help ATDR with Penelope, please go to the Donate button on the front page of this site. No donation is to large or too little, and every donation will be greatly appreciated...
1.17.19 UPDATE: Results of Penelope’s eye appointment with Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic yesterday.
ATDR’s long-time trusted ophthalmologist who taught animal ophthalmology at Texas A&M for many years before going into private practice in Houston said that Penelope is completely and permanently blind. In laymen’s terms, he said that the cause of her blindness was repeated severe eye infections and possibly glaucoma over time in the past that have caused her eyes to become so shrunken by now he could barely see them to examine them. He also reported a lot of scar tissue in both eyes which can be caused by the same. He had no way of knowing whether the past conditions that caused her blindness had been treated properly or treated at all at the times that they happened or at any time, for that matter, when there might have been hope of saving her sight by proper treatment and care. There is nothing that can be done to help Penelope now.
Pet owners! Please beware and take your babies to a licensed veterinarian for eye issues and infections to be treated early on when noticing something is not right. The longer something like this goes untreated properly, the worse it can get and the harder to control by a healthcare professional if it’s not entirely too late. Don’t ever allow what happened to sweet Penelope to happen to your best friend. Penelope deserved so much better…all babies do.
