Special Needs: Dental Prophylaxis Surgical Discharge Summary
Physical examination findings
The pre-surgical physical exam revealed severe dental tartar, pus oozing from all surfaces of the mouth, missing teeth, loose teeth, and a left sided heart murmur with a grade III/VI. He was scanned for a microchip and one was not found. No other abnormalities were noted.
Testing findings
Pre-anesthetic lab work was not performed. No parasites were seen on his fecal examination today. He was occult heart worm negative.
Surgery
Ultrasonic sonic scaling, subgingival curettage, polishing, fluoride application. Krugar underwent major dental surgery today. He is missing teeth #103, 102, 101, 201, 202, 210, 311, 310, 305, 301, 401. Teeth #110, 109, 106, 105, 203, 204, 205, 206, 209, 303, 302, 402, 403, 405, 406, 408, 410, and 411 all fell out during debulking of tartar. Carnassial teeth #108, 208, 309 were removed via bur and elevators for severe root exposure (all roots of these teeth had at least 2/3 exposure). Pre-molars #107, 207 were elevated and removed for severe mobility and root exposure. Canine #204 had an oronasal fistula and fell out during de-bulking. A gingival flap was then used to close the defect. Canine #104 had a pocket of over 12 mm and an oronasal fistula. It was extracted via an elevator and a gingival flap used to close the defect. Both lower canines were extracted via elevators for severe root exposure and mobility.
Recovery
Post-operative recovery was quiet and uneventful. "Krugar" was offered Royal Canin GI High Energy canned food (hand fed in meatballs) and water post-operatively. He ate well.
Prescriptions
Please give all prescribed medications as directed on the label. Pain medication should be started tonight at bed time. We recommend the following medications for Krugar. Please let us know if you have this medication in rescue stock, or if you need us to fill them for you.
Carprofen 12.5 mg by mouth once daily with a meal for 3 days for inflammation and pain.
Tramadol 25 mg by mouth every 8 to 12 hours for 10 days as needed for pain.
Clindamycin 75 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 14 days, then recheck oral cavity.
Follow up care and testing
Only small meals and water should be offered tonight, with normal feeding resuming tomorrow morning. Please do not change the diet unless directed otherwise. Canned or moistened food only for the next 14 days.
Home care is extremely important for maintenance of a healthy oral cavity. Please use the prescribed home care products to reduce the buildup of plaque and tartar. The oral cavity should be checked in 14 days to check the integrity of the oral sutures and the healing of the oronasal fistulas.
Description: Kruger was found as a stray in a seaside community on the Texas gulf coast. A sweeter boy you would never find, he is almost perfect. Kruger, named for his dark green painted and overgrown toe nails, he is now sporting a much shorter set! This little guy is shy at first but very loving! He is smart and curious and enjoys exploring the yard. Kruger rides well in the car and loves a good snooze on the couch with is human! Kruger is a doll and will be fully vetted later this week. Stay tuned as we learn more about his longterm health.
